The Mail Man Hates Me!

I Love Delivery Days. My delivery guy, not so much. My supplies came today and it's like Christmas. I still get excited every time, even if it's the same products I have in my kitchen, there is something exciting about brand new bottles. I get asked a lot where I get my supplies. I try as much as possible to get them here in Newfoundland but unfortunately I usually end up getting the majority of my supplies from a company online. Things like Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter are no where to be found. And you can forget organic. I can get Coconut oil here but the quantity I need (I buy large buckets usually 5 buckets at a time) is not available. That also goes for my essential oils, the tiny bottles just can't do it. I buy from 2-3 companies online all based here in Canada. My main supplier comes from Ontario and they are awesome.

Here is this weeks order. All 108 Pounds of it (There are two more buckets I forgot to include). I usually make two orders around this size a month.

New: Seaweed Powder for a new product I'm making in the next few weeks.

Ground Pumices Stone for a new soap I'm making specifically for feet and dirty man hands :)

Kaolin Clay for a few new products in the works.

Cocoa Butter, love the mild chocolatey smell it has.

These are just a few of my new items, and my regulars. I am always open to suggestions and requests for new products. If you are looking for something you just can't find let me know maybe I would love making it too :)

Lip Balm Flop & Win

So my sister asked me to add a line of Lip Balm to our products. I decided to give it a shot last night. I had a few rules for myself. First it had to be organic and all natural. Second I wanted it to be Vegan, both because I have a pretty big vegan consumer base and also because I wanted to use Soy Wax instead of Bees Wax since I buy bags in the "Holy Frigg that's a big bag of wax" size.
Not sure you can appreciate the size in this pic but it's about the size of a standard pillow case and I currently have 3 of these bags.
So I researched lip balm and what ingredients make the best balm, I decided on Organic Coconut oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Virgin Olive oil and well the soy wax. I slipped into my Mad Scientist coat and had at her. This was late last night and like a kid at Christmas I jumped up this morning all excited to try the best lip balm ever!

Yea, not so much. It was soft and gloopy.

Wet and mucky.

It just would not harden. So back to the drawing board I went. I calculated the balm using bees wax not Soy Wax and with the amount of mint essential oil  used I really needed to add a lot more Soy Wax.  So with more tweaking and a few extra lip lovin ingredients I crossed my fingers and poured again.

Success!!  Solid Lip Balm Love!!

It only took a few tries to perfect and now I have a smooth lip nourishing all natural vegan minty tingly lip balm. I wonder how many tries it took those guys at Kraft to make Cheese Whiz? :)

** These will be available in my Etsy store and at the Farmers Market in two types Mint & Sweet Orange as soon as I get them labeled.

Blogging about Stuff

So I was told that if you own a business you need to blog. Silly me I just thought if you owned a business you made stuff and sold it but apparently I was wrong so here goes the blogging. Blogging? I'm assuming that's right. I asked what exactly I would be blogging about and she told me to blog about "I don't know stuff" So that's what this blog will be about, stuff :) Mostly making soap and body items and all that Jazz and about our products and store and probably a bunch of other stuff too. I own St.John's Soap Works, I make handmade from scratch soap and body items in my kitchen here in Newfoundland Canada and this is my Blog....about stuff :)
